William Walsh

William

Captain William “Bill” Walsh (retired) served as the Operations Division commander for the Voorhees Township, New Jersey, Police Department. In this role, he led the agency’s Patrol Bureau and Criminal Investigations Bureau and was also responsible for professional standards and staff inspections. Captain Walsh founded and led the department’s Health and Wellness Program and the Multi-Agency Police Peer Support (MAPPS) team. The Health and Wellness Program included family wellness, university research partnerships, and automatic annual wellness visits with a board-certified police and public safety psychologist. In 2019, Captain Walsh was honored with the International Association of Chiefs of Police 40 Under 40 Award. In 2021, he was named a U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Justice Law Enforcement Advancing Data and Science scholar. He is also a National Policing Institute Executive Fellow, a Rutgers University Certified Public Manager, and a graduate of the 93rd Session of the Police Executive Research Forum Senior Management in Policing Institute and was awarded the New Jersey Attorney General’s Excellence in Policing Detective Pablo Santiago Resiliency Award for his efforts in creating the MAPPS team. Captain Walsh holds a master’s degree in administrative science, which resulted in the creation of a police stress and suicide course for supervisors at a regional academy in 2011, inspired by the loss of two friends to suicide in 2009. Captain Walsh has several graduate certificates, including one in police leadership from Temple University. He is currently completing a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling.
